Print versus megapixels in a nutshell

Many photographers think you need a lot of megapixels when you want to print large. This is not always the case. If you look at a large print you need to view it from a certain distance. The bigger the print the further the distance. For large billboards you will notice the pixels are not that fine but are actually large dots.

300dpi is the standard for printing.

My Sony A1 is a 50 Megapixel camera and has a resolution of 8660 x 5784.

Let’s divide these x & y value by 300 (dpi). 8660 / 300 = 28,86 & 5784 / 300 = 19,28

For the actual size in centimeters we have to multiply these values by 2,54 (cm)

28,86 x 2,54 = 73,3 cm (long edge)

19,28 x 2,54 = 49 cm

A 24 Megapixel camera = 6000 x 4000. This results in a 50,8 cm & 33,9 cm print.

When we print this format we have excellent quality. If we want to print larger we divide by 150 dpi and we get double the size.
